WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager exited Tuesday’s game against the Athletics in the sixth inning with right hamstring tightness.

Seager pulled up and grabbed his hamstring while he ran out a fifth-inning single and left the game before the top of the sixth. Center fielder Josh Smith replaced him at shortstop and Leody Taveras entered the game to take Smith’s spot in the outfield while the Rangers were ahead 8-2 at Sutter Health Park.

Seager will undergo an MRI on his hamstring with the Rangers expecting to know more about the severity of the injury by Wednesday.

“I’m just hoping we get the best news on Corey,” Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said, “because I was hoping to look at this lineup for a while, and we may be in a holding pattern, who knows.”

The 30-year-old missed more than a month of games during the 2023 season with a left hamstring strain and had his 2024 season bookended by sports hernia repair surgeries. He came to spring training healthy this year and has played in 21 of the Rangers’ first 23 games.

Seager has slashed .286/.345/.468 in 77 at-bats this season and has been especially hot (.400/.464/.600) in his last seven games. If Seager is forced to miss an extended period of time, Smith — who filled in at third base when Josh Jung went down and in left field when Wyatt Langford went down — would likely serve as the Rangers’ everyday shortstop.
