DETROIT — Veteran right-handed pitcher José Ureña was selected to the big-league roster by the New York Mets on Sunday.
Ureña, 32, signed a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the Tigers prior to the 2021 season after spending parts of six seasons with the Miami Marlins.
He pitched 100 innings for the Tigers in 2021, mainly as a starter. He finished with a 5.81 ERA and lost his rotation spot by the end of the year.
But Ureña’s career wasn’t done. The Mets are his fifth team since his release by the Tigers.
He signed a minor-league deal with the Milwaukee Brewers and made the Opening Day roster out of spring training in 2022, but he lasted only a month. After clearing waivers, he signed with the Rockies and was a member of their rotation from July onward. He posted a 5.14 ERA in 89 1/3 innings and demonstrated the kind of ground-ball rate that seemed like a good fit for the mile-high Coors Field.
The Rockies re-signed Ureña for 2023, but he was released after posting a 9.82 ERA in 18 1/3 innings.
He signed with the White Sox on a minor-league deal later in the season and made his Chicago debut against the Tigers.
He’s coming off a solid season with the Texas Rangers, where he posted a 3.80 ERA in 109 innings as a starter and reliever.
Ureña signed a minor-league deal with the Mets before this season.
