The NBA’s all-time winningest coach stepped down Friday afternoon and he has a connection to Aledo.
Legendary San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich announced he was stepping away from coaching and moving to the team’s front office Friday. Over his career, Popovich has amassed a record of 1,422-869. His 1,422 wins are the most in NBA history.
Popovich had a connection to Aledo with late science teacher and basketball coach R. Craig Kelley. The two were childhood friends, growing up in Gary, Indiana. Popovich, well before his NBA coaching days, worked an Aledo basketball camp in 1975. Kelley would relay the story to WRMJ a few years before he died in 2016.

Popovich led the Spurs to five NBA titles and is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame.
He presented Kelley with a Spurs NBA championship ring in 2014.
