For the second time in three seasons, the Spurs experienced a rise in the NBA Draft Lottery. Their pick from the Atlanta Hawks fell right where expected at 14th, but as the teams kept getting called, the Spurs’ own pick was nowhere to be found. As 8th passed by without the Spurs being called, it became clear that they would be receiving a top 4 pick, which is a massive rise. Also rising into the top four despite the odds were the 11th seeded Dallas Mavericks and 5th seed Philadelphia 76ers.

Then came time to call the top four. The Charlotte Hornets landed their favored spot of 4th, and the 76ers at 3rd, giving the Spurs a top 2 pick! Ultimately, they came in second behind the Mavs in the Cooper Flagg Sweepstakes (Nico Harrison doesn’t deserve this!), but still, what a steal to get the second overall in this both top heavy and deep draft!

This will be the Spurs’ third top-four pick in three seasons after selecting Victor Wembanyama at 1st overall in 2023 and Stephon Castle at 4th in 2024, both of whom ended up winning Rookie of the Year. This is also the first time ever that the Spurs will pick 2nd overall, and their only other top 4 picks in franchise history are David Robinson (1st, 1987), Sean Elliott (3rd, 1989) and Tim Duncan (1st, 1997).

We’ll have much more in what this means for the Spurs soon, including other things they could do with that 2nd overall pick (for example, the trade market just opened up even more), so be sure to stick around for more lottery coverage. Go Spurs Go!
