Just when the Atlanta Braves’ offense seemed to wake up and avoid a sweep against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the hope and excitement vanished as quickly as it came in the most horrific way.
Although the series already belonged to the Diamondbacks after the Braves dropped the first two games during the week, Thursday’s outcome hit different, as it wasn’t just the fact that they loss (and are now seven games under .500) but how they loss.
The Braves took the lead early in the game starting in the second inning, but most of the action didn’t start until the bottom of the fifth.
Austin Riley increased the Braves’ lead by four (7-3) after a homer to left field.
In the sixth inning, Ronald Acuña jr. and Drake Baldwin hit back-to-back homers before Michael Harris’ RBI single in the eighth, bringing in Nick Allen to give the Braves their last run to secure their six-run lead… or at least.. what we thought was secure.
The top of the ninth was a nightmare for Braves’ fans as the Diamondbacks did the unexpected… caught up and won in that same inning.
Reliever Scott Blewett (Now Designated for Assignment) gave up three runs to start, and unfortunately the changes throughout the Bullpen didn’t make matters easier.
An 11-10 win for the Diamondbacks also resulted in a new record for the Braves, as this was their first time losing a game with a lead of six or more runs through eight innings since 1973 (against the Mets).
Now as they gear up to face the Giants, they’re hoping to secure their first win in the month of June and hopefully turn things around.
