
Reds pitcher Wade Miley is speaking out for the first time after being identified as a drug supplier for former Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs.Skaggs died of a drug overdose in 2019 after being found unresponsive at a team hotel near Dallas as the Angels were gearing up to play a series against the Texas Rangers.Miley is said to have supplied Skaggs with pain pills containing oxycodone while the two were teammates on the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2012 and 2013 seasons.Even though Miley is alleged to have at one time been a pill supplier for Skaggs, the former pitcher’s overdose came several years after the two were teammates. Miley is not alleged to have had any role in Skaggs’ death, and has never been charged with a crime.Before the Reds’ game against the Detroit Tigers on Friday, Miley briefly spoke with the media.”I hate what happened to Tyler. It sucks. My thoughts are with his family and his friends,” Miley said. “But I’m not going to sit here and talk about things that someone might have said about me or whatnot. I was never a witness for any of this. I was never accused of any wrongdoing.”He later continued, “I’d rather just focus on the Cincinnati Reds right now and baseball and what I have to do moving forward. I’ve got to get ready for a game on Sunday.”The news of Miley being a supplier to Skaggs came out in a court deposition earlier this week as part of a wrongful death lawsuit that was filed by Skaggs’ family against the Angels.The deposition was from Ryan Hamill, Skaggs’ former agent. In the deposition, Hamill says he was concerned in 2013 about his client’s significant drug use, which ultimately led to a confrontation that involved him and Skaggs’ family. At the time, Skaggs was in his second season with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Miley is alleged to have been a primary supplier of his at the time.Skaggs was later traded to the Angels after the 2013 season.Former Angels communications director Eric Kay is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence in Texas after being found guilty on two charges of providing drugs related to Skaggs’ overdose. Former Angels pitcher Matt Harvey testified during Kay’s trial in 2022 that he provided drugs to Skaggs while the two were teammates during the Angels’ 2019 season. Harvey and three other players also testified to receiving pills from Skaggs.Miley just recently signed a one-year contract with the Reds on June 4, before the allegations against him were publicly made.The Reds have so far not publicly commented on the allegations against Miley.
