Houston Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez appeared to be on track to return from a hand injury over the weekend, but some troubling new information about the issue surfaced on Saturday.
Alvarez has not played since May 2 because of a hand injury. While he had a live batting practice session on Friday that appeared to go well, Astros general manager Dana Brown said the team has since discovered a new injury for Alvarez.
Brown told reporters on Saturday that Alvarez experienced discomfort in his hand during the BP session, which led to another round of imaging. Doctors discovered that Alvarez has a “very small fracture” in his right hand that is 60% healed, according to Brown.
“He took some swings. He hit a couple balls out, a few balls opposite field, line drives. He looked pretty good but still felt a little bit of discomfort,” Brown said. “So what we decided to do was if you still feel that discomfort, let’s just go get more imaging. We got more imaging yesterday. Because all the inflammation and fluid was gone, we were able to see that he has a 60 percent healed, very small fracture in his hand.”
