The Boston Celtics were looking to become the first team to win the NBA Finals in back-to-back seasons since the Golden State Warriors accomplished the feat from 2017 to 2018. While the Celtics fell short of their ultimate goal, now general manager Brad Stevens is hard at work trying to upgrade the roster again.

Upgrading a roster that won over 60 games in each of the past two seasons can’t be easy, but Boston has no choice but to make some changes to help make up for Jayson Tatum’s torn Achilles. One of those changes could even involve an injection of youth.

Specifically, according to NBA insider Grant Afseth, the Celtics are looking to trade up in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft.

“Boston holds picks No. 28 and 32 and has been discreet in its evaluation of point guard prospects. Oklahoma City holds picks No. 15 and 24 along with a deep stockpile of assets. Brooklyn is considered one of the most aggressive teams in the trade market, holding four first-round picks (Nos. 8, 19, 26, and 27).”

Why would the Celtics want to add late-first-round selections to their roster? It probably makes a lot more sense for Boston to package their top two picks and jump up the draft board if a trade presents itself.

Whether they can land the point guard they covet remains to be seen, but launching up the draft board would certainly give Boston a better chance at landing one of their top prospects.
