The Washington Capitals announced Tuesday that defenseman Martin Fehervary will miss the entirety of the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs after suffering a knee injury.
Fehervary sustained the injury last Tuesday against the New York Islanders in the Capitals’ second-last regular season contest. Fehervary has since undergone a surgical procedure to repair his meniscus.
Through 81 appearances with Washington this season, Fehervary reached career highs in all major offensive categories including five goals and 20 assists for 25 points coupled with 25 penalty minutes and a plus-18 rating while averaging 19 minutes of ice time per game, fifth most on the Capitals.
Originally chosen 46th overall by Washington in the 2018 NHL Draft, Fehervary has since skated in 299 career contests over part of five seasons with the Capitals in which he has collected 22 goals and 53 assists for 75 points. The 25-year-old Slovak native has also added three points through 12 postseason appearances.
Per PuckPedia, Fehervary is in the second year of a three-year contract that carries a $2.675-million cap hit.
Beyond his time with the Capitals, Fehervary has also seen success in international competition, including three trips to the World Juniors from 2017-19, with the final appearance seeing the budding blue-liner recognized as a top-three player with the Slovaks after he notched five points in as many games. Fehervary has also represented Slovakia at the IIHF World Championships on four occasions.
For the Capitals, the club began postseason play Monday, starting on a winning note in coming away with a 3-2 overtime victory against the Montreal Canadiens. Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin led the way to the victory as he notched two tallies, including his first-ever playoff overtime goal. The Capitals will have a chance to push their series lead to two in Game 2 coming Wednesday in Washington.
