The Celtics shored up the backend of their roster ahead of Sunday’s regular-season finale and ahead of the NBA playoffs on Saturday.

Guard JD Davison had his contract converted from a two-way deal to a two-year NBA contract, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported. While the exact value of the contract wasn’t reported, the Celtics can only sign free agents to the veteran’s minimum.

While Boston previously had Davison on a two-way deal, the elevation will allow him to play in the postseason. Players on two-way contracts aren’t eligible for postseason play.

Davison’s promotion also fills out the 15th and final spot on the Celtics’ roster. Boston kept its final active roster slot empty all season long with the likely purpose of saving money against the luxury tax. As the Celtics have one of the most expensive rosters in the league this season, they cut Lonnie Walker at the end of training camp in October instead of using the final roster spot on him. Boston briefly had 13 players on its roster in February after it traded Jaden Springer at the deadline, but it signed Torrey Craig shortly after.

Davison, 22, has emerged as a standout for the Celtics’ G League affiliate ever since they took him in the second round of the 2022 NBA Draft. He was named G League MVP for his play with the Maine Celtics this season, averaging 25.1 points, 7.4 assists, and 5.2 rebounds per game to go with .481/.333/.742 shooting splits. Davison’s play helped the Maine Celtics reach the conference semifinals of the G League playoffs.

Boston has had Davison on a two-way contract ever since it drafted him. Per league rules, the Celtics would’ve had to either sign him to a guaranteed contract this offseason or let him walk as teams are only allowed to sign a player to a two-way deal for up to three consecutive seasons.

When Davison’s seen the court in the NBA, it’s mostly come in garbage time. However, he’s seen some longer stints of action as of late. He got some early minutes in the Celtics’ March 23 win over the Trail Blazers, playing alongside a few of Boston’s regular rotation players in that game.
