You have already read much on this site about top Cubs pitching prospect Cade Horton from Sara and Josh over the last couple of days. (If you haven’t, check out both those links.)

And now it’s reality. The Cubs are calling up Horton to make his MLB debut Saturday evening against the Mets at Citi Field.

Horton, who is the Cubs’ No. 2 prospect (behind Matt Shaw) per MLB Pipeline (and also per Josh), was the team’s No. 1 pick (seventh overall) out of the University of Oklahoma. He missed a large portion of the 2024 season with a shoulder injury, but this year has posted a 1.24 ERA and 0.862 WHIP in six starts for Triple-A Iowa, with 33 strikeouts in 29 innings.

Horton will wear No. 22, last worn by Matt Mervis last year.

To make room for Horton on the 26-man active roster, lefthander Tom Cosgrove was optioned to Iowa. Cosgrove has thrown well in two separate stints with the Cubs covering four innings. He’s allowed three hits and a walk and one run for a 2.25 ERA, retiring 12 of the 16 hitters he’s faced.

To make room for Horton on the 40-man roster, righthander Eli Morgan was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

Good luck to Cade Horton as he makes his MLB debut!
