DENVER – Colorado Rockies manager Bud Black has been relieved of his duties, the club announced Sunday.

Black, 67, was in his ninth season as manager for the Rockies, which are off to a Major League-worst 7-33 start this season.

“Our play so far this season, especially coming off the last two seasons, has been unacceptable. Our fans deserve better, and we are capable of better,” Rockies owner Dick Monfort said in a statement. “While we all share responsibility in how this season has played out, these changes are necessary. We will use the remainder of 2025 to improve where we can on the field and to evaluate all areas of our operation so we can properly turn the page into the next chapter of Rockies baseball.”

In addition to Black, the Rockies also fired bench coach Mike Redmond. Black will be replaced by third-base coach Warren Schaeffer, who will serve as interim manager, and Redmond will be replaced by hitting coach Clint Hurdle, who will serve as interim bench coach. Hurdle previously managed the Rockies from 2002-09.

“I want to thank Bud Black and Mike Redmond for their contributions to the organization across their eight years here,” Monfort said. “I appreciate their hard work and dedication and wish them nothing but the best going forward.”

Black finishes his tenure as Rockies manager with a 554-690 record, the winningest manager in franchise history. He led the Rockies to consecutive playoff appearances in 2017 and 2018, but Colorado hasn’t finished with a winning record since then. His contract was set to expire following this season after he signed a one-year contract extension with the Rockies in October 2024.

Prior to managing the Rockies, Black spent nine seasons as the San Diego Padres manager from 2007-15. He has a career managerial record of 1,193-1,403 in 18 seasons with the Padres and Rockies.

Black also played 15 seasons in MLB from 1981-95 for the Seattle Mariners, Kansas City Royals, then-Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants. Black, a southpaw pitcher, had two stints in Cleveland; his first from 1988-90 and his final season in MLB in 1995.
