Former Atlanta Braves star Rafael Furcal has surrendered to police in Florida after being charged with two felonies, Miami television station WPLG Local 10 is reporting.
The 47-year-old Furcal — who lives just north of Miami in Weston, Fla. — faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and throwing a missile into an occupied vehicle during an incident that took place Monday. It’s not clear what exactly Furcal is accused of throwing, but Florida law defines a missile in part as a “stone or other hard substance which would produce death or great bodily harm.”
A native of the Dominican Republic, Furcal was National League Rookie of the Year with the Braves in 2000 and an NL All-Star in 2003 before leaving as a free agent in 2006. The shortstop played six seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, two with the St. Louis Cardinals and one with the Miami Marlins before retiring in 2015.
A three-time All-Star, Furcal totaled 1,817 hits, 113 home runs, 314 steals and 1,063 runs scored in 14 MLB seasons. He won a World Series ring as a member of the Cardinals in 2011.
