CINCINNATI (WXIX) – A former Milwaukee Brewers player is suing the Cincinnati Reds over an injury he says ended his career.
Darin Ruf, a former first baseman for the Brewers, is suing the Reds for negligence and negligent hiring and training, according to a lawsuit filed in Hamilton County.
The lawsuit says Ruf claims he was playing for the Brewers at Great American Ball Park in June 2023 when he ran to catch a foul ball on the field and hit his knee on the tarp roller.
Ruf claims the tarp roller, which is used to cover the field during bad weather and maintained by the grounds crew, didn’t have protective cushioning over the sharp metal.
He says he didn’t see it, leading to a permanent knee injury.
The lawsuit accuses the Reds of not taking reasonable precautions, and alleges they breached their duty of care by hiring people who aren’t qualified.
A spokesperson for the Reds says they cannot comment on active litigation when FOX19 NOW reached out for a statement.
