STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Gov. Kathy Hochul announced that flags across New York are to be flown at half-staff this weekend in memory of those lives lost in the nightclub disaster in the Dominican Republic.
More than 200 people, some of whom have been identified as New Yorkers, were recently killed when the roof collapsed at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, the Caribbean nation’s capital, on Tuesday.
“Our hearts break for our beloved neighbors in the Dominican Republic who are grieving a massive loss,” Hochul said. “This week I have spoken to key leaders, including the Dominican Consul General in New York and Congressman Adriano Espaillat, to express our condolences and discuss ways to partner in the future. With more than 1 million people of Dominican descent in the Empire State, the ties between New York and the Dominican Republic remain unshakeable.”
In solidarity with the Dominican Republic, Hochul has ordered that flags be lowered from Saturday, April 12 to Sunday, April 13.
As explained by Hochul’s office, New York is home to the largest Dominican population of any state in the U.S.
