Kavan Markwood, the fan who fell 21 feet from the Clemente Wall during Wednesday night’s Pirates-Cubs game, is “awake, alert, and able to speak,” according to an update Saturday on a GoFundMe started by Jennifer Phillips, who describes herself as the mother of Markwood’s girlfriend.

Markwood’s girlfriend, Alonna Brown, posted on her Facebook page Saturday that Markwood “is awake and continuing to work toward making his body stronger each day.”

Markwood, 20, entered the hospital in critical condition after falling from the right-field stands at PNC Park during the seventh inning. He hit the wall and landed on the warning track, where medical staff brought Markwood off the field on a stretcher. Pittsburgh Public Safety is considering the incident accidental.

Markwood graduated from South Allegheny High School near Pittsburgh in 2022, playing football there and at Walsh University and Wheeling University.

“After everything he’s been through since the accident on Wednesday night, this progress feels nothing short of miraculous,” Phillips wrote on the GoFundMe, which has raised more than $27,000 as of Saturday for Markwood’s medical bills. “He still has a long road ahead of him, but today brought a moment of hope that we’ve all been holding onto.”
