CLEVELAND, Ohio — Logan Allen, after an encouraging performance by the starting rotation during the Guardians’ first homestand of the season, kept the momentum going Tuesday night against the Orioles at Camden Yards.

The left-hander threw 5 2/3 scoreless innings as the Guardians improved to 9-7 with a 6-3 win over Baltimore.

Allen (1-1, 2.30) has not allowed an earned run over his last three starts. He’s covered 15 innings in those starts, but Tuesday was the first time he pitched through the fifth inning to qualify for the win.

He threw 95 pitches, leaning heavily on his four-seam fastball (35 pitches) and sweeper/slider (25). The average velocity of the fastball, according to Statcast, was 90.2 mph. The average velocity of the sweeper was 77.5 mph.

The variation between the two pitches kept Baltimore’s batters guessing for most of his start.

“We were able to keep guys off balance using the sweeper,” Allen told reporters after the game. “It was a testament to Bo (Naylor) calling a great game. We executed well.”

Allen struck out six, walked two and allowed two hits. A sweeper, by the way, is usually considered a slider with a bigger break.

“When you’re on the same page as your catcher, it makes it easy out there,” said Allen. “It takes a lot of thinking out of it.”

In the Guardians’ six-game homestand, the rotation went 2-1 with a 1.74 ERA (six earned runs in 31 innings). The starters struck out 34 and walked 15.

Breakfast and trivia

On Tuesday we dined on an omelet filled with crab meat. Crab, in any shape or form, is the favorite food of the Charm City.

For Wednesday how about a bowl of crab soup? Soup for breakfast, why not? When in Baltimore do as the natives do.

Meanwhile, consider this question. Steven Kwan, who bats left-handed, hit his third homer of the season and the 28th of his career on Tuesday night. How many has he hit against right-handers this year? Answer below.
