Roman Anthony is ready to make his debut with the Boston Red Sox.

Marcelo Mayer believes so, anyway.

Anthony and Mayer have essentially been tied at the hip for two years, rooming together both for spring training down in Fort Myers, Fla., and during their time together with Triple-A Worcester. It’s a tight-knit relationship, so if anyone knows whether or not Anthony is ready, it’s Mayer.

“I think he’s ready,” Mayer told Chris Cotillo of MassLive. “Obviously, playing with him every single day for the last two years, I get to see the type of player he is and the type of person he is. I think his transition is going to be pretty smooth to the big leagues whenever that may be. I know he’s gonna be ready.”

Anthony has been torching the ball in the International League, entering the weekend slashing .306/.435/.505 with eight home runs, nine doubles and 44 walks to go with just 49 strikeouts. It’s clear that he’s better than his competition, but there are things the organization would still like him to work on. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said as much this week when explaining why he hadn’t made the call for reinforcements yet.

Mayer, on the other hand, is finding his footing after a week in the show. Boston helped him experience a victory for the very first time on Friday, where his slash line dropped to .217/.250/.304 after six games.

We don’t expect to be waiting much longer for the duo to reunite in Boston, but for now, things appear to be staying status quo.
