Putting somewhat of a damper on their 4-3, extra-inning win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night, the New York Mets are facing the very real possibility of losing Mark Vientos for the foreseeable future.

The third baseman and designated hitter injured his hamstring while running out a grounder to short in the top of the 10th inning. He stumbled and fell upon leaving the box and did not make it halfway up the first baseline. He gingerly walked off the field while clutching his right hamstring.

Vientos, emotional following the game, told reporters (h/t MLB.com) he was “not sure” about the severity of the injury even after he underwent testing upon his exit. Results are expected to come later on Tuesday.

The forecast is not a promising one, at least according to manager Carlos Mendoza.

“It didn’t look good,” he said. “He’s going through all the testing, and we’ve got to wait and see.”

The 2025 season has been a struggle for Vientos, who burst onto the scene last year and took over the starting third-base job with 27 home runs and an .838 OPS in 111 games.

In 53 games this year, he is batting .230 with just six home runs and a .678 OPS.

Should he miss considerable time, Brett Baty will resume his starting role at the hot corner. Once the organization’s top prospect at the position, his continued struggles saw Vientos’ breakout relegate him to the minors in 2024.

He has seemingly put it together after another short demotion, batting .288 with an .889 OPS, five home runs, and 16 RBI in his last 22 games.

The left-handed Jared Young and the right-handed Starling Marte will likely fulfill the platoon in the designated hitter role.
