The Montreal Canadiens are high on young defenseman Gustav Lindstrom, but now he’s shocked the NHL world by signing a massive new deal overseas.

In 2023/24, the Montreal Canadiens landed young defenseman Gustav Lindstrom, and after posting 3 goals in 14 games with the team, hopes were very high for the former second-round pick of the Detroit Red Wings.

Last season however, he spent the entire year in Laval due to the breakout of players like Lane Hutson at the NHL level, tallying a solid 4 goals and 11 points in 42 games, a clear step back from previous performances.

Now, at 26-years old, he has made a shocking decision, as Djurgården of the Swedish Hockey League have announced on Thursday that he has signed a massive five-year deal with the team effective immediately.

After 174 games in the NHL over the last six years, it’s easy to see why teams believe Lindstrom may have reached his full potential at the top level, with just 5 goals and 35 points scored in that time, and without superstar level performances in the AHL, the belief was that he may have peaked.

At 26-years old however, there’s still plenty of time for him to head home to Sweden to turn things around and potentially force his way back to the NHL, but with the talented defenseman signing a five-year deal, it shows that he may not be interested in that.

Ultimately though, Lindstrom has shown plenty of talent in his career in North America, but simply failed to put it together with consistency, and now, we will wait and see what he does in Sweden before a potential return.
