LOS ANGELES – The NBA has fined Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards $50,000 for what it called “directing inappropriate language and making an obscene gesture toward a fan” in Minnesota’s Game 1 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Saturday.
In the third quarter of the game, Edwards was sitting at the scorer’s table following a timeout when he heard a fan heckling teammate Rudy Gobert. Edwards immediately came to Gobert’s defense, hollering that Gobert had “$200 million” and then correcting himself when Gobert held up three fingers.
“He got $300 million!” Edwards crowed.
Had the interaction ended there, Edwards likely would have been fine. But he proceeded to make a lewd comment and grab his groin. The exchange was caught on video and spread quickly across social media.
The NBA has fined Edwards $380,000 this season for various infractions, including cursing in postgame interviews and gesturing toward officials. He also led the NBA in technical fouls this season and was suspended one game when he picked up his 16th technical. He was nearly suspended a second time when he was given his 18th, but the league rescinded that foul.
