NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero generated plenty of headlines when he shared in an article published on Tuesday evening that he heard from an unnamed “longtime NFL assistant coach” that Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders completed “the worst formal interview I’ve ever been in in my life” during the predraft process.
“He’s so entitled,” that coach said about Sanders. “He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. … But the biggest thing is, he’s not that good.”
During Wednesday’s edition of the NFL Network “Good Morning Football” program, show host and NFL Media personality Kyle Brandt ripped the anonymous coach over those comments.
“Maybe the vibe that you set in the room was critical, and Shedeur picked up on that,” Brandt said, per Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio. “And maybe he was right, because the first second you could, you betrayed the sanctity of that room and went anonymously and started spouting off about this player. ‘He’s so entitled.’ I see entitlement in a grown professional who is going around anonymously destroying young athletes with very personal quotes anonymously as they’re about to realize their dream and become professionals.”
Hours before Pelissero’s piece went public, Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated revealed that an “NFC quarterbacks coach” recently suggested that Sanders would “be a sixth-round pick” if he weren’t the son of Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders. That take referenced concerns related to Shedeur Sanders’ athleticism and seemed to have nothing to do with whether or not he “hit the wrong notes” in interviews with clubs during the NFL Scouting Combine.
“Do not listen to that quote,” Brandt continued while speaking about the Pelissero article. “[The coach] says, ‘[Sanders is] not that good.’ Well, maybe neither are you, anonymous coach, and maybe that’s why you’re an assistant coach and not a head coach, and you have been for a long time. I am so triggered by this. I think it’s nonsense.”
Florio noted that Brandt stopped short of ripping the media outlet owned by the league that “happily shared a juicy tidbit that will harvest plenty of clicks.” Fair or not, the longtime NFL assistant coach may have given outsiders interesting information regarding why Sanders could fall to the Pittsburgh Steelers at overall pick No. 21 or drop to the Cleveland Browns at the start of the draft’s second round.
