Pirates fan ‘showing progress’ one week after falling 21 feet from PNC Park stands

Twenty-year-old Kavan Markwood is showing progress, according to his doctor, after a devastating fall during a Pirates game at PNC Park. Chief Medical Officer at Allegheny General Hospital Dr. Al Philp said Markwood was admitted to AGH with severe injuries to his skull, spine, ribs, and lungs, one week ago after falling 21 feet from the right field stands at PNC Park as the Pirates took on the Chicago Cubs.”I’m happy to say that he’s progressed well, he’s at a point now where he’s off the breathing machine, he’s out of the intensive care unit, and is preparing to move on to the next step, which will be physical therapy, rehab,” Philp told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 Wednesday.Markwood’s sister said he has also been starting to walk and talk. “He called me sis, that’s what he called me his whole life,” Taryn Markwood said.”I’m very grateful that I have him still.”Taryn Markwood praised first responders, medical staff, and the overwhelming support from the community.“We’re deeply grateful to everyone who donated and kept Kavan in their prayers,” said Taryn Markwood. “Additionally, we are deeply appreciative of everyone who contributed to the GoFundMe and campaign. Kavan has always been full of surprises and we were thrilled to see him making excellent progress every day.”Kavan remains at AHN, and it is unclear when he will officially begin rehab.
