“We’re calm. I’m not desperate for a contract or anything like that.”

Brayan Bello, Kristian Campbell, Garrett Crochet, and Ceddanne Rafaela are all young players the Red Sox have signed to contract extensions over the last year or so.
Boston has also engaged in talks with Triston Casas and, on a lesser scale, with Roman Anthony. This comes as the organization is focused on locking up its youthful core as the price tag for talent rises year after year.
Wilyer Abreu, another one of the club’s young stars, says he’s heard nothing from the team on that front.
“No, not yet,” Abreu told ESPN’s Enrique Rojas when asked if the Red Sox have offered him a contract extension.
“We’re calm. I’m not desperate for a contract or anything like that. When the time comes, it will come,” Abreu said. “I don’t have to worry about that kind of thing because, over time, it will come on its own.”
The 25-year-old outfielder has been one of Boston’s best players on the young season. Batting .306 with a .959 OPS, three home runs, and 12 RBI, Abreu is an important cog in the middle of the Red Sox’ offense.
His defense in right field continues to be Gold Glove-caliber, too. Abreu’s 0.5 defensive wins above replacement is MLB’s second-best among right fielders, behind the Twins’ Harrison Bader’s 0.6.
According to FanGraphs, Abreu’s 1.1 total WAR leads the Red Sox.
“Stay calm and focus on what I can do and not try to do more,” Abreu said of trying to continue his strong start to the year.
Since making his MLB debut with Boston in 2023, he has consistently performed at the big-league level. In 180 total games, Abreu is batting .268 with an .813 OPS and 20 homers, 44 doubles, 84 RBI, and 62 walks. The left-handed hitter seems to fit the bill as a player Boston would want to secure long-term.
“My goals are to continue improving, stay in good physical shape, and hope this year is better than last,” Abreu said.
