There were a lot of people who were happy for Marcelo Mayer to get the call up to the Boston Red Sox on Saturday, including Nick Sogard.

The infielder, who was promoted from Triple-A Worcester earlier this month after Triston Casas suffered a season-ending knee injury, spoke highly of Mayer prior to Sunday’s finale against the Baltimore Orioles.

“I found myself just gravitating toward him and Roman (Anthony), Vaughn (Grissom), Nate Eaton and Trayce (Thompson),” Sogard told WEEI. “It’s a really good group down there and we’d spend a lot of time together after the games just hanging out, talking baseball. So I think you can say infinite things about the player and the maturity for a 22-year-old. (He’s) a good kid to hang around with. I enjoyed being with him and it’s fun to play with him.”

Mayer received the news on Saturday while the Red Sox were in the midst of their first game of a doubleheader and the Worcester Red Sox were preparing for a doubleheader of their own. The highly touted prospect got a ride from Polar Park and Fenway Park and made his MLB debut in Game 2.

After going 0-for-4 on Saturday, Mayer went 2-for-4 and scored Boston’s lone run in its loss to the Orioles.

Both Sogard and Mayer figure to be with the Red Sox for the foreseeable future with Casas out for the year and Alex Bregman expected to miss time with a significant quad injury.
