Pedro Martinez revealed that he still has family members missing after a nightclub rood collapsed in the Dominican Republic early Tuesday morning.
“I still have family members that are still in the rubbles,” the former Boston Red Sox pitcher said in a video posted to his Instagram account. “And we don’t know what happened to them. … We want to be strong like we always have been. We are a country that prays a lot and remains united all the time.”
Martinez grew up in Santo Domingo.
“I hope we can all unite and pray that our families can be found,” he later said in Spanish.
It’s unclear who from Martinez’s family is missing.
At least 124 people were killed and hundreds were injured when the roof of the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo collapsed. Musicians, professional athletes and government officials were among those inside.
Former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel was confirmed to be one of the victims of the collapse.
Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the northwestern province of Montecristi and sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz, alerted President Luis Abinader about the disaster. She called him from underneath the rubble but later died at a hospital.
Rescue crews are still searching for survivors more than 24 hours after the collapse. Officials said Wednesday they have rescued 145 survivors from the wreckage of the nightclub.
