MILWAUKEE — Trevor Story was out of the lineup in the homestand finale Sunday and Alex Cora hinted that he might also sit out the road trip opener of the team’s six-game road trip.
Instead, the slumping shortstop is back in the lineup in the first of three against the Milwaukee Brewers. Story is just 14-for-111 (.126) with just two extra-base hits over his last 28 games and is batting only .227 with a .607 OPS. He’s also struck out 64 times this season.
Meanwhile, with third baseman Alex Bregman sidelined, catcher Carlos Narvaez has been elevated to third in the order. Narvaez hit cleanup over the weekend. Rookie second baseman Kristian Campbell is back in the cleanup role.
Finally, Marcelo Mayer, who made his debut in the Saturday nightcap, is back at third base for the third straight game.
On the mound, the Red Sox will turn to ace Garrett Crochet, whom they hope can deliver some length after the team’s bullpen was leaned on for plenty of innings at the end of the homestand.
This is just the fourth Red Sox’ first visit to Milwaukee since the ballpark opened in 2001. They were last here in 2023, when they took two of three from the Brewers.
