Red Sox Notes: Defensive Woes Open Door For Struggling White Sox

The Red Sox turned in their worst game of the season by far in Friday’s 11-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field.

Two big issues continue to plague the Red Sox. They make too many errors and they strike out far too often.

Red Sox starter Sean Newcomb lasted just four innings with 94 pitches. He got tagged for six runs, though just two were earned. Boston finished the night with five more errors, including a pair of catcher’s interferences from Blake Sabol. Boston simply had a disaster that must be erased immediately with a series win still up for grabs.

“We gotta clean that up,” Alex Cora told reporters, per NESN’s postgame coverage. “We didn’t have a good defensive week at home. This was a bad night defensively, bad night overall. We didn’t hit. We didn’t play defense. Turn the page, be ready for tomorrow. We’ve just got to be better.”

“Just a lot of plays that have to be made that weren’t,” Triston Casas told reporters, per NESN’s postgame coverage. “… It’s been an issue for the first couple games. As an offense, we’re going to do better moving forward.”

In chilly temperatures in Chicago, Friday’s game totally snowballed as the Red Sox barely had any positives to take from the start of a six-game road trip.

“We didn’t execute today, we didn’t,” Cora said. “It’s not a lack of energy. I think energy comes from offense. We haven’t hit. It looks that way. Defensively, we had a chance to turn a double play.”

The White Sox won just their third game of the season to improve to 3-10. Boston hasn’t taken advantage to the best degree against the worst team in baseball, which continued Friday night.

“That’s why they’re big-leaguers,” Cora added. “When you give the opposition more than 27 outs, they’re going to cash in. They’re gonna make you pay. That’s what happened today.”

Here are more notes from Friday’s Red Sox-White Sox game:

— Boston has now committed 19 errors in 15 games to start the season. That includes four catcher’s interferences. The Red Sox already led the American League in errors in each of the last two seasons.

— The Red Sox are now 8-12 against the White Sox since the start of the 2022 season.

— Boston struck out 11 times at the plate Friday night. The lineup struck out 10 or more times in a game for the 10th time in 2025.

— Kristian Campbell tallied two hits for Boston and has reached base in all 14 of his games to start his MLB career, as referenced by NESN’s Will Middlebrooks.

— Former Red Sox prospect Chase Meidroth tallied his first MLB hit, scored two runs and reached base four times with three walks in his debut. He joined the White Sox in December as one of the four prospects Boston sent to Chicago for Garrett Crochet.

— The Red Sox and White Sox continue their three-game series Saturday at Rate Field. First pitch is set for 4:10 p.m. ET. You can catch the game, plus an hour of pregame coverage, on NESN.
