Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer are insanely talented prospects who sit on the precipice of making their debuts with the Boston Red Sox.
It’s easy to forget they’re also young adults who fall into pretty funny stereotypes.
Anthony, for instance, has admitted to ordering Chick-fil-A delivery almost every day while sleeping in until the afternoon on off days. Mayer, on the other hand, has the exact dialect you’d expect out of a 22-year-old from Southern California. Alex Bregman found out about their quirks early in his tenure with the Red Sox, when his young teammates asked him for a favor in a hilarious manner.
“Hey, bro, do you just want to marinate in the clubhouse and talk shop?” Mayer asked Bregman, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan.
No, we’ve never heard something phrased that way, either.

“It made me laugh,” Bregman told Passan, “because, like, ‘marinate in the clubhouse and talk shop’ — it sounds like me when I was 21. All I wanted to do is just sit in the clubhouse for four hours after a game and talk about baseball.”
The Red Sox sure are glad their star said yes, as all three are off to rip-roaring starts to the season. Bregman is slashing .304/.381/.567 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs through 43 games, while Mayer and Anthony have looked more than ready to make the jump from Triple-A Worcester.
It’s only a matter of time before all three are “marinating” in the same clubhouse in Boston.
