Marcelo Mayer’s wait is over.

The Red Sox are calling up Mayer, one of MLB’s top prospects, ahead of the second game of their doubleheader against the Orioles Saturday. MassLive’s Katie Morrison-O’Day was the first to report the move.

After Alex Bregman went down with an injury on Friday, Alex Cora needed to find infield reinforcements, and didn’t dismiss the idea of Mayer moving up to Boston to stabilize the lineup. The decision was seemingly made official shortly after Cora’s pregame availability.

Mayer spent the afternoon in Worcester, receiving congratulations from his teammates before making his way out of the clubhouse and en route to Boston.

Roman Anthony — MLB’s top ranked prospect — gave Mayer a hug and congratulations on instagram as he awaits his own turn to make the drive into Boston.

Mayer has played four games at third base with the Woo Sox this season, and though his primary position is shortstop, it appears he’ll be deployed at third base while Bregman is out of the lineup. His experience at multiple positions (shortstop, second base, third base) will help him find a spot once Bregman returns.

“We’ll play him everywhere,” Cora said of Mayer after Game 1 Saturday.

The No. 8 prospect in baseball according to MLB Pipeline, Mayer is batting .271 with 43 RBIs and nine home runs, along with a .347 on base percentage.

Mayer was vocal with his disappointment not making the Red Sox roster at the beginning of 2025, feeling he had performed well enough to earn his spot. Now, almost two months later, he can only smile.

“I’m excited. It’s been a pretty emotional 30 minutes,” Mayer told reporters.

Mayer is in line to make his 2025 Red Sox debut on Saturday night.
