Trevor Story didn’t come through for the Red Sox on Wednesday when they really needed him to.

The winning run was on third base when Story stepped into the batter’s box with one out in the 10th inning of Boston-Toronto Game 3 at Fenway Park. All the veteran shortstop had to do was put the ball in play, but Story struck out by chasing a slider well off the plate. The Blue Jays went on to win 2-1 in 11, handing the Sox their third straight loss.

“It bothered me a lot,” Story told reporters about his missed opportunity in extras.

Fortunately for the two-time All-Star, he didn’t have to wait long at all for redemption.

Story once again found himself in a high-pressure situation at the dish early Thursday night. The 32-year-old dug in with the bases juiced in the 10th, and this time around, Story was able to push across the game-winning run. His infield bouncer was enough to plate David Hamilton and push Boston back to .500 on the season.

It was an important development for Story and the Red Sox, who avoided being swept by a division rival and can now start their latest road trip with some momentum. Boston will try to keep it rolling Friday when it kicks off a three-game set in Chicago.

NESN’s full coverage of the opener against the White Sox begins at 6:30 p.m. ET.
