The Boston Red Sox on Tuesday announced they traded left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for cash considerations.
The club designated the 31-year-old Newcomb for assignment over the weekend.
Newcomb posted a 3.95 ERA in 41 innings with the Red Sox. He totaled 12 appearances and was 0-4 in five starts at the beginning of the season. Newcomb’s final appearance for Boston came against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday when he allowed one run on one walk and one hit batter.
The trade marks a return to Oakland for Newcomb, who appeared in 14 games for the Athletics during the previous two seasons. The Red Sox signed Newcomb to a minor league contract this offseason.
Boston is in Milwaukee for its middle game against the Brewers on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. ET, and you can watch it live on NESN after an hour of pregame coverage.
