Injuries to Red Sox veterans have forced a youth movement in Boston. Roman Anthony and Marcelo Mayer joined the team in response to injuries to Alex Bregman and Wilyer Abreu, respectively.

Bregman went on the injured list on May 24 with a strained quad. The injury was described as similar to the one he had in 2021 that caused him to miss 58 games. So far, Bregman has missed 18 games.

The third baseman spoke to the media before Friday’s game and offered an encouraging update on his recovery.

According to Christopher Smith of MassLive, Bregman answered, “I hope so,” when asked if he could return before the All-Star break. The third baseman also posted a video of himself doing work in the outfield and said, “We’re basically rehabbing for 12 hours a day.”

If Bregman rejoined the team in the first game after the break, he would have missed 46 games, 12 fewer than his 2021 injury. Players tend to be more aggressive with their timelines than medical staff, but Bregman’s enthusiasm is encouraging nonetheless.

The third baseman was off to a great start to his 2025 campaign, hitting .299 with 11 home runs in 51 games.

Marcelo Mayer took over at third following the injury to Bregman and has started to settle into the major leagues. He hit two home runs against Tampa Bay on Wednesday in a 4-3 Red Sox win. Craig Breslow will have a hard time sending him back to Triple-A Worcester when Bregman returns.
