The Cincinnati Reds and thousands of fans celebrated Major League Baseball’s all-time hit leader Pete Rose at Great American Ball Park Wednesday night.The festivities were planned for months and came one day after Rose was posthumously reinstated by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred.Manfred ruled that the league’s punishment of banned players must end after the player’s death. Rose died last September at the age of 83.Rose was banned from Major League Baseball over gambling allegations in 1989. He applied for reinstatement numerous times over the years before his death last September.A member of Cincinnati’s Big Red Machine, Rose is the all-time MLB leader in hits (4,256), games played (3,562), at-bats (14,053) and singles (3,215).All fans in attendance at Great American Ball Park received a Pete Rose replica jersey, featuring a commemorative “Pete Rose Night” tag.Students from Rose’s alma mater, Western Hills High School, sang the national anthem Wednesday night.Members of the Rose family delivered the game ball and served as the game’s honorary captains as the Reds battled the Chicago White Sox.Before the game, a Q&A session hosted by legendary broadcaster Marty Brennaman took place, with Reds Hall of Famers George Foster, Ken Griffey Sr., Eric Davis and Barry Larkin participating.
