Seattle Mariners general manager Justin Hollander provided a slew of injury updates ahead of Friday’s series opener against the Toronto Blue Jays.
Mariners GM gives updates on rash of injured players
Most of those updates concerned players on Seattle’s 40-man roster. Information on those players can be found here.
In addition, Hollander also gave some minor league injury updates. Here’s what he said about those players.
• Starting pitcher Taylor Dollard threw two scoreless innings in the Arizona Complex League on Wednesday, which marked the 26-year-old right-hander’s first outing in nearly 25 months.
Once a top prospect in the Mariners’ system, Dollard was the Texas League pitcher of the year in 2022 following a standout season in Double-A Arkansas. Dollard opened 2023 in Triple-A Tacoma, but made just three starts before suffering a torn labrum that sidelined him for more than two years.
Hollander said Dollard is slated to throw another two innings within the next week. After that, he could be activated to one of Seattle’s minor league affiliates later this month.
“He went through a lot,” Hollander said. “It’s been a long time since he’s pitched with an affiliate, and he’s really grinding through the rehab process. … Really pumped for him. That’s a long two years for him to go through the rehab process.”
• Starting pitcher Teddy McGraw has resumed throwing after dealing with an elbow flexor injury. Hollander said the 23-year-old right-hander could return to one of Seattle’s affiliates by the end of May.
McGraw is the No. 18 prospect in the Mariners’ farm system, according to MLB Pipeline. He was selected by Seattle in the third round of the 2023 MLB Draft while he was recovering from Tommy John surgery. He returned last August to make four starts for Low-A Modesto before hurting his elbow.
“Teddy is back up and throwing,” Hollander said. “Feels really good. … Good progress from Teddy.”
• Reliever Zach Pop is slated to begin throwing live batting practice this week after dealing with elbow discomfort in spring training as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays’ organization. Hollander said the 28-year-old right-hander could be activated to Triple-A Tacoma by the end of May.
Pop signed a minor league deal with the Mariners on April 16 after being released by Toronto earlier that month. He has spent four seasons in the majors, logging 158 career relief appearances with the Miami Marlins and Toronto Blue Jays.
“We haven’t seen Zach in our uniform out here, but he’s got great stuff and could be somebody who could really help us,” Hollander said.
• Reliever Trevor Gott returned from Tommy John surgery this week to throw two scoreless innings in the ACL. The 32-year-old right-hander is now headed to Triple-A Tacoma, according to Hollander.
Gott spent the first half of the 2023 season in the Mariners’ bullpen before being traded to the Mets. He then signed a one-year deal with the Athletics, but missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. Gott returned to the Mariners on a minor league contract in February.
“We’ll see him in action this weekend,” Hollander said. “He’s doing great as well. No setbacks. Feeling really good.”
