The Spanish national team coach may have a new job very soon. According to Eurohoops, Sergio Scariolo will soon travel to the United States to interview with an NBA franchise, which has formally requested an interview with him for the coaching position.

Leading the national team since 2015 in his second stint, two periods filled with success and medals (Gold at EuroBasket 2009, Gold at EuroBasket 2011, Silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games, Gold at EuroBasket 2015, Bronze at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, Bronze at EuroBasket 2017, Gold at the 2019 World Cup, Gold at EuroBasket 2022), this would mark Scariolo’s return to coaching at the club level following his departure from Virtus Bologna in 2023.

If his arrival in the NBA is confirmed, Scariolo would take charge of a team in the world’s top league as a head coach (or associate head coach, something unclear at this point) for the first time, following his experience as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors (2018-2021). Currently, the only NBA franchise with a vacant head coaching position is the Phoenix Suns, who fired Mike Budenholzer on April 14 after a disappointing season.

Two franchises that would have been a natural fit for Scariolo have already confirmed their coaching positions: the San Antonio Spurs named Mitch Johnson as head coach following Gregg Popovich’s retirement, while the Memphis Grizzlies (Santi Aldama’s team) did the same with Tuomas Iisalo, so the possibilities are wide open.
