“I’m living my worst nightmare right now.”

On Tuesday, Triston Casas answered questions regarding his season-ending injury and the timeline for his return.
“I’ve heard a different amount of months. I haven’t heard anything over a year though. So, as of right now, our goal is Opening Day next year,” said Casas.
Casas played 29 games before rupturing his patellar tendon on May 2. This is his second injury in two years as last season he only competed in 63 games due to torn cartilage in his ribcage.
“I’m living my worst nightmare right now,” Casas said. “This is the worst-case scenario for any type of player to go through a recovery that’s double-digit months long. But going through it now, I feel like I’m going to be better as a consequence of it. It’s just part of the game.”
Casas ruptured his patellar tendon while running to first base. The first baseman was hospitalized after the game and a few days later, he received season-ending surgery.
“I had a lot of goals for myself this year that I’m not going to be able to accomplish. So back to the drawing board,” he said. “I’ll have a full offseason to recover [and] get back to the caliber of player I hope on being.”
Casas was treated by Dr. Eric Berkson, the team’s orthopedist, who performed a similar surgery in 2014 on former pitcher Garrett Richards, who returned in 2015. Berkson said that Casas should make a full recovery.
“He’s been a big help to me mentally, walking me through everything that I was going to feel,” said Casas. “So I’m really grateful for him and his messages, his kind words to me. He’s been awesome.”
With his goal of making his return for Opening Day next season, Casas briefly outlined his plan to reach it.
“[I’m] going to spend the winter in Fort Myers rehabbing. And until then…just try to stay in a positive mindset. I know there’s a lot of healing that’s done outside of the training table. So I think just trying to take it one day at a time, be positive, and [maintaining] a good headspace is going to be important as well.”
