The Boston Red Sox finally added some external first base help Thursday when they acquired Ryan Noda from the Los Angeles Angels and optioned him to Triple-A Worcester.
The Red Sox have tried several different options so far to replace Triston Casas after his season-ending knee injury. They talked to Rafael Devers about a position switch. They introduced the position to Kristian Campbell. They cycled Romy Gonzalez, Abraham Toro and Nick Sogard through the spot. Noda will likely join that rotation as some point as another candidate.
His big-league track record doesn’t pop off the page, but there’s production in recent years from Triple-A that likely intrigued the Red Sox. Noda launched 22 home runs with an .877 OPS last season for Triple-A Las Vegas in the Athletics organization.
Now, Vegas is virtually a launching pad for hitters and he was facing Triple-A pitching, but a sliver of that with a steady glove at first is all Boston can ask for. He struggled in Triple-A Salt Lake City early in 2025, so he’ll look to get his swing right in Triple-A Worcester as the calendar turns to June.
Noda has baseball experience in the region when he played for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox and the Brewster Whitecaps in the Cape Cod Baseball League.
