The Yankees’ bats were quiet at Comercia Park on Tuesday as Tarik Skubal masterfully tossed six scoreless innings in what turned out to be a 5-0 loss for New York.
The reigning American League Cy Young Award winner allowed four hits, no walks and struck out six over his six innings of work. The Yankees extended their losing streak to three games.
“[Skubal] was attacking the zone,” Yankees infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. told reporters, via MLB.com. “He pitched us completely different from how our scouting report had him throwing. He kept us off-balance, hit his spots.
“I was expecting more of the hard stuff today; he was throwing a lot of offspeed today. He’s normally a fastball guy — he throws 100 [mph] — and he was hitting his spots with the offspeed, as well.”
Yankees manager Aaron Boone noted after the loss that Skubal’s delivery is “deceptive.”
“Then, it’s three pitches. He’s going to be mid- [to] upper-90s with the fastball. Really, really outstanding changeup and a good breaking ball. He’s got everything. So he won that Cy Young for a reason. Having three outstanding pitches with that deceptive delivery makes him hard to get a bead on.”
The Yankees have a chance to salvage the series in Detroit on Wednesday with right-hander Jack Flaherty on the mound.
